In theory three 500 lb bombs could be carried, one under the centre fuselage and one under each wing, but in practice it was rare to carry more than two and these were quite often the lighter 250 lb bombs. Both versions had the taller fin and rudder assembly derived from that fitted to the contemporary Spiteful/Seafang (described later). 47 both carried two heated cameras, one vertical and one oblique, and these were the reason for the FR (fighter reconnaissance) designation. 47 was the chin intake of the carburettor immediately behind the propeller spinner, which resulted in a cleaner nose profile.

Even before the first flight, orders for 200 Furies and 200 Sea Furies were placed in April 1944. However, the RAF orders were cancelled by the end of the war in 1945 and Sea Fury orders were reduced to only 100 aircraft, all to be produced by Hawker instead of being shared with Boulton Paul as originally planned. In the meantime the first Sea Fury prototype (SR661) flew on 21 February 1945 powered by a Centaurus XII driving a four-bladed propeller. This aircraft was navalised to the extent that it was fitted with an arrester hook to allow deck-landing trials to take place but it had non-folding wings.

When the Pacific War ended in August 1945, almost the entire Royal Navy carrier fleet was deployed in the Far East, including five out of six fleet carriers (Illustrious was at home refitting) and four new light fleet carriers of the 11th ACS (Venerable, Colossus, Glory and Vengeance) whose air groups each comprised twenty-one Corsair fighters and eighteen Barracuda torpedo bombers. The fleet carriers made up the 1st ACS and became designated Task Force 37 with approximately 255 aircraft embarked.
