Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp, Germany In 1943, Jewish inmates of the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp were determined to celebrate Hannukah. The men saved up bits of fat from their small food portions. The women pulled out threads from their tattered clothing and twisted them into makeshift wicks. They transformed half of a raw potato into a candleholder. Dreidels were carved out of their wooden shoes, and given to the dozen children in the camp. Risking their lives, the prisoners made their way to Barrack 10 on the first night of Hanukkah, where a Hasidic rabbi conducted a candlelighting ceremony, giving these poor, suffering Jews a sense of spiritual strength similar to that found in the story of the Maccabees.
